Computers, Printing and WiFi

The Huntsville Public Library offers a full range of computer, Internet, and printing services.

Computers

Public access computers

There are 16 public access computers available for your use. They are available for one-hour time slots. Log in with your library card, or get a guest login from the front desk. Our public access computers have access to the following software:

Online catalogue

Use one of these workstations to look for materials in our collection. There are five catalogue workstations in the library, one of which is fully accessible.

Early literacy computers

We have four early literacy workstations in our Children's Library. Kids can use these computers to build their computer and literacy skills.

Creativity and Exploration Hub

Our Creativity and Exploration Hub (the Hub) has one iMac computer and one Windows 10 computer, both with 27 inch monitors. You will need to book the Hub before you use it. Talk to library staff at the front desk to reserve the Hub. The workstations in the Hub have the following software:

Printing, photocopying and scanning

Printing

All of the public access computers and the workstations in the Creativity and Exploration Hub have the ability to print. Library staff release print jobs from the Central Service Desk after you pay for them. Wi-Fi printing is not available. Costs for printing are $0.25 per black and white page and $0.50 per colour page.

Printing instructions

  1. Look for the print command under the “File” menu or in the “Settings” menu.
  2. Pressing print will bring up the print options and a print preview.
  3. In the print options you can choose between a black and white or colour print job, number of copies and other options.
  4. Send the print job from your computer. There will be a pop-up on the screen where you will type in the name of your print job.
  5. Go to the Central Service Desk and tell staff of your print job. Once you have paid for your print job, staff will release it to the printer.

You can also print documents from a USB drive. Files must be either PDF documents or JPG images.

Photocopying

The computer printer is also our photocopier. To use it, ask library staff to unlock the machine. Then place your document on the scanner to make a copy. You can also use the document feeder, which is on top of the photocopier. Costs for photocopying are $0.25 per black and white page and $0.50 per colour page.

Scanning

The photocopier can also scan to email or to a USB Drive. The photocopier can only scan files as a PDF or a JPG. Scanning is $0.25 per exposure.

Scan to email

  1. Press the Scanner app on the touch screen.
  2. Ask library staff to unlock the machine.
  3. Press the green plus (+) button to add an email address.
  4. You can press the settings button on the right to change your scanning settings.
  5. You can press the preview button to get a preview of your scan.
  6. Place the document on the scanner or in the document feeder.
  7. Press the green “Start” button to scan and send the document in an email.
  8. There is no confirmation message.

Scan to a USB drive or SD card

  1. Insert a USB drive or SD card into the slot by the touch screen.
  2. Press the Print/Scan Memory Storage Device app on the touch screen.
  3. Select the scan option.
  4. Ask library staff to unlock the machine.
  5. On the next screen you can choose your scan settings and scanning location.
  6. Press the green scan button to scan your document.

Wi-Fi

We offer free Wi-Fi to all visitors of the Huntsville Public Library.

Connecting to Wi-Fi

Windows

  1. Click on the Network & Internet Settings icon on the bottom right hand corner in your taskbar.
  2. Select the Huntsville Library wireless network and click Connect.
  3. You can check the “connect automatically” button to allow your computer to remember our Wi-Fi network the next time you come to the library.
  4. Open up a Web Browser (Google Chrome, Firefox or Edge), and you will be re-directed to our terms and conditions page.
  5. Check the box that says you agree to our terms and conditions, and then press login.
  6. You will need to agree to the Wi-Fi terms and conditions each time you visit the library.

Apple macOS

  1. Click on the AirPort Icon on the top right hand corner in your taskbar.
  2. Select the Huntsville Library wireless network and click Connect.
  3. Open up a Web Browser (Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari), and you will be re-directed to our terms and conditions page.
  4. Check the box that says you agree to our terms and conditions, and then press login.
  5. Your device will automatically remember our Wi-Fi network.
  6. You will need to agree to the Wi-Fi terms and conditions each time you visit the library.

Apple iOS

  1. Go to your Settings App, and select the Wi-Fi tab.
  2. Tap on the Huntsville Library wireless network.
  3. Your device should automatically open a window to our terms and conditions page.
  4. Check the box that says you agree to our terms and conditions, and then press login.
  5. Your device will automatically remember our Wi-Fi network.
  6. You will need to agree to the Wi-Fi terms and conditions each time you visit the library.

Android

  1. Go to your Settings App, and select the Wi-Fi tab.
  2. Tap on the Huntsville Library wireless network.
  3. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open up your notifications.
  4. Tap on the notification that says “Log in to network”.
  5. A window will open to our terms and conditions page.
  6. Check the box that says you agree to our terms and conditions, and then press login.
  7. Your device will automatically remember our Wi-Fi network.
  8. You will need to agree to the Wi-Fi terms and conditions each time you visit the library.

Additional information

  • Printing is not available from our Wi-Fi network.
  • There is no limit on how long you can stay on our Wi-Fi network.
  • Library staff can help connect to the Wi-Fi network, and will do their best to solve any technical issues.
  • Our Wi-Fi network is an open network, and is not secure. Third parties may be able to view your activities when using the Wi-Fi network. The Library takes no responsibility for the security and privacy of online activities.
  • Users of the Wi-Fi network are bound by the terms of Huntsville Public Library's Code of Conduct, Technology @ HPL Policy, and Privacy Policy.
