Come to Virtual Storytime!

Amber McNair, HPL's Youth Services Librarian, offers Virtual Storytime using the online communication platform Zoom. Virtual Storytime includes picture books, songs, rhymes, bounces, finger plays, and scarf songs. Sometimes there's jumping.  Sometimes there's actions to do along with the songs. Have your shakers and scarves ready!

Let's sing together (virtually)!  Perfect for children ages 0-6 and their parents/caregivers.

 How To Participate
Great to have you here!  Follow these steps to get on the email list!
  • Email Amber McNair.
  • Download the Zoom app
  • Sign in with the Zoom Meeting ID or link, along with a password, emailed to you by Amber McNair. Get added to the email list to receive weekly meeting details - email Amber McNair.
  • Please, have a facecloth, small piece of fabric or thin scarf available to participate in the educational scarf songs!

In order to follow Zoom security recommendations, we implemented selective meeting invitations, a required password and the waiting room feature.

A parent/caregiver of the Virtual Storytime participant(s) receives a weekly email from Amber McNair with meeting details. The email contains the Zoom Meeting ID and link, along with the required meeting password. When joining the Zoom meeting, participants first enter a waiting room, and the meeting host will allow entry.

  • Build with LEGO at home before Virtual LEGO Builders Club or during the program
  • Download the Zoom app on your mobile device.
  • Sign in with the Zoom Meeting ID or link, along with a password, emailed to the participant's parent/caregiver. Get added to the email list to receive weekly meeting details - email Amber McNair.
  • Hey, kids! During the virtual activity, build your design, and see what other kids have built.  You can share and describe your creation!

Calling all kids who like to be creative, craft and make things! For kids who would like to work on their craft activity while interacting virtually by chatting with others, and going through the creative process together, please join in! Amber McNair, Youth Services Librarian, offers bi-weekly Virtual Crafty Kids using Zoom. Get added to the email list to receive bi-weekly meeting details.

  • Find out the bi-weekly craft activity
  • Collect supplies around your home
  • Download the Zoom app
  • Sign in with the Zoom Meeting ID or link, along with a password, that has been emailed to the participant's parent/caregiver by Amber
  • During the program, work on your craft project alongside other kids in the Zoom meeting, and see the creations of others while in Gallery View

Household supplies to gather in advance:

  • 10 large craft sticks or popsicle sticks
  • Crayons, pencil crayons, markers or paint & paint brushes
  • Masking tape

Paint a Fruit/Vegetable from Life

Household supplies to gather in advance:

  • Any type of paper, paints and paint brushes at home
  • Bucket of water
  • Use a table covering at home while painting, wear clothes that can get messy
  • A fruit or vegetable you would like to use as inspiration to paint!

Tissue Box Monsters

Household supplies to gather in advance:

  • Tissue box
  • Craft paint and paint brushes
  • Glue stick
  • Egg carton or foam balls for eyes
  • Googly eyes or card stock and marker for eye balls
  • White paper or card stock for teeth
  • Any extra craft supplies for decorating such as coloured foam, construction paper, buttons, stickers, pipe cleaners
  • Use a table covering at home while painting, wear clothes that can get messy

  • acrylic paint
  • multiple pieces of paper or cardstock
  • paint palette (could be a piece of cardboard)
  • natural objects to paint with such as mushrooms, cut potato, celery piece and/or end, Bell pepper end, pine needles
  • Use a table covering at home while painting, wear clothes that can get messy
